Why June 2? Satchel

“Don’t look back”

June 2 1953 On the same day that Queen Elizabeth II was crowned: Satchel Paige, the great Negro League pitcher who got his chance in the Big Leagues long after his prime, and at an age most ballplayers were retired, pitched 3 innings of hitless relief for the St. Browns and got the win in a 5-3 decision over the Washington Senators.

It was after the game when a reporter asked him what the secret of his success was at such an advanced age that Paige, reported to be nearing sixty at the time, uttered the famous line: “Don’t look back–something might be gainin’ on you.”
